Driving Test Car Hire or Your Own Car? Compare Your Options

Compare an instructor’s car, your own car and specialist hire for a London driving test. Check requirements, preparation and total costs before booking.

Which should you choose?

Start with the instructor's car you already know, if your instructor agrees and is available. An eligible own or family car can be another option. Specialist dual-control hire may help if neither is available, but confirm insurance, suitability and time to practise before paying.

Start with your situation

Your instructor is available

Ask to use the car you have practised in. Confirm readiness, the full appointment window and the total test-day charge.

You regularly practise in your own or a family car

Check that specific vehicle against every DVSA requirement and confirm test insurance. Familiarity alone does not make a car eligible.

You need a replacement car

Ask a specialist provider about a suitable dual-control hire car, any assessment, insurance and time to get used to it. Do not assume an ordinary rental is suitable.

Compare your test-day car options

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to compare every option.

Send the same brief to each provider

  1. Your test date, start time and test centre.
  2. Whether you need manual or automatic, and the car you have been learning in.
  3. Your recent experience and whether you are already their pupil.
  4. The same preparation time and collection/return arrangements for each quote.
  5. Ask for the total charge, what is excluded, any assessment requirement and cancellation terms in writing.
  6. Confirm the vehicle before relying on the booking. An enquiry is not a reservation or a promise that you are test-ready.

Compare one appointment, not headline prices

For a fair comparison, give each provider the same test centre, date and time, transmission, preparation time and return arrangements. Ask for an itemised total. Keep the DVSA booking fee separate from the school or hire charge. A low starting price is not a complete quote if preparation, travel or vehicle time is extra.

Where K Driving School fits

K Driving School offers instructor car hire with pre-test lesson support in its East and North London test-centre areas. Contact the team with your appointment details and recent driving experience. New pupils can enquire, but availability, suitability and any preparation must be agreed before a booking is confirmed. If your current instructor and familiar car are already available, compare that option first.

If you change cars before your test

Make time to adjust the seat and mirrors and practise with the controls, brakes and visibility of the replacement car. Discuss whether your independent driving is consistent in it. A car booking cannot replace preparation, and a provider’s willingness to quote does not confirm that you are ready to take the test.
